It actually uses the microchip, and it's unique ID number, to decide when to open up and let kitty in and out of the house. Whenever your cat wants to gain access, or get out, they system will scan the unique ID number and compare it to the pre-programmed number for your cat. If the numbers match, hey-presto the door opens! If it doesn't match the number, or no number is found the door wont open.If you aren't sure if your cat has a microchip you simply have to ask your vet to provide you with the information. The Pet Porte cat flap is designed to read the most common type of microchip, the FDX-B; it will not read other types of microchip.

As a last resort I decided to invest in a Pet Porte, somewhat reluctantly as they are so expensive. However, it has been worth every penny! It is reliable; it allows our cat entry everytime with no problems, and has been robust enough to resist the efforts of rogue cats. It has a scanner on the outside which reads the cat's microchip, unlocks the cat flap and locks it again after a set time. The time that the flap remains unlocked can be adjusted upto about 20 seconds, which has been great as my cat is often quite slow to come in. Although it is expensive I have been really impressed with the Pet Porte and it has been the solution to all my problems!"
